The problem with a plain shopping list is that it is written in the order you thought of things, and a supermarket is not laid out in the order you thought of things. So you walk the store twice, or you get home and find the one item you walked past three times.

GroceryGen sorts the list the way the shop is actually arranged. Items are categorised automatically — fresh produce, dairy, dry goods, frozen, household, cleaning — using Apple Intelligence on your device, so adding "milk" puts it with the dairy without you choosing a category or maintaining a list of rules.

It matters most for the lists you did not write carefully: the ones assembled over three days, by two people, in whatever order things ran out.

Typing a twenty-item list into a phone is the reason most grocery apps get abandoned in favour of a scrap of paper. GroceryGen reads lists instead. Point the camera at a handwritten note and OCR pulls the items out; photograph a receipt and it imports what you bought.

The receipt path is the more useful of the two, because it builds a purchase history without you recording anything. That history is what makes restock reminders work: the app learns roughly how often you buy the things you buy regularly, and suggests them again around the time you would otherwise notice they had run out.

The meal planning calendar closes the loop from the other end — plan the week, and the ingredients land on the list rather than being remembered one at a time.

A grocery list is usually a shared document even when the app treats it as a private one. Lists, meal plans and purchase history sync through iCloud, so a second person adding something while you are already in the shop shows up on the list in your hand.

A Home Screen widget keeps the list visible without opening anything, which is the difference between a list you check and a list you forget you made.
